SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
In furthering SOPHIA’s mission to advance the scholarship of U.S. presidents and their presidencies, the Journal of the American Presidency (JOTAP) welcomes submissions of articles and book reviews.
Articles
Proposed articles must be:
- Between 2500 and 7500 words (including citations)
- In 12-point font, either Arial or Times New Roman
- Double-spaced
- In the Chicago Manual of Style citation format, with citations appearing as footnotes, not endnotes.
The author’s name, job title, and institutional affiliation should be included on the title page only. Please include an abstract of no more than 500 words.
Illustrations, tables, graphics, and other material that supplement the article are
welcome, with proper references and citations.
Manuscripts will undergo a double-blind review and editing process. If revisions are
necessary, an editor will contact you accordingly.
Book Reviews
Proposed book reviews must be between 500 and 1250 words and pertain to books published no earlier than three years from the date of the review submission. References to specific pages should be cited within the body of the text, in this sample format (p. 175).
General Process and Policies
Please send all submissions by email to jotapeditors@gmail.com, attached as Word documents (not PDF). Please include “JOURNAL” as the email subject line, and include a physical address and phone number. Submissions should also include a statement that the work is original, has not been published elsewhere, and is currently not being considered for publication elsewhere.
Strong preference for submission of articles and book reviews is given to SOPHIA
members, although nonmembers may be invited by the Journal Editorial Board to
submit contributions.

Journal of the American Presidency holds the right to reject contributions, including after an offer of publication. SOPHIA retains the copyright for all material published in Journal of the American Presidency.
